Washing machine - No electricity
I would like to give you some do-it-yourself tips in this case for a washing machine that won't turn on. Some of these problems can be very simple.
So you can see in this case when I press the power button nothing happens. The first thing we really need to check is, could it be as simple as the product actually being connected? Well, I'll go back and check to see and in fact, the wire was out. So let's go ahead and plug it back in and go ahead and see if our washer starts now.
Well, a simple little fix if your outlet is easy. This is pretty obvious sometimes. You can see it if it is behind the washing machine. Your safety is our main concern. If you don't feel like you can move this washing machine, it's too heavy, ask for help. Remember to put down the floor protector to protect your floor. We don't want to see any damage. If there is anything on top of the washer that could fall and damage your floor, remove it as you move the dryer forward.
Let's give you another scenario. Maybe we have an area where we have verified that we have the drive plugged in, but we hit the power button and nothing happens. We may have a problem when we don't have power in that outlet. So one of the things we can do is an easy way to verify if there's voltage coming into that outlet. Let's get a known source for something we know works. Something that's simple and easy to use is maybe a night light that you have in the hallway that's working right now, a small lamp, small fan, something that we can verify is running from another outlet and we can plug it into that outlet and let's see if we have strength there. If we can't get the night light or fan to work, we may have a problem with the circuit breaker.
Now what I did is I have a circuit breaker just to show you. If you're lucky enough, these circuits are marked on your circuit board, you can go to it and if it's marked as a washer, you can go ahead and check if it's tripped. If it is, all you have to do is turn it back to the off position, then turn it back to the on position, come back and see if the dryer or washer works then.
Now, every now and then, we get capacitive touch screen products. Some of the newer stuff doesn't have those manual buttons, they have a piece of glass that goes through the front and they call it capacitive touch panels. Without getting too technical, it actually uses resistance and our fingers to complete a circuit. But sometimes you may have a problem where if you tap the power button, nothing works. The simple things to do first is to unplug the washing machine and then let's go ahead and use some mild detergent with a soft cloth and wash it all over. Maybe there is some kind of film here that is preventing our finger resistor from completing the circuit. Another thing I find with capacitive circuits is that sometimes my fingers are at that point where they are too dry and won't allow that circuit to really close. What works sometimes is if I use a moisturizer on my finger or maybe I can have another adult in the family or a friend come over and see if they can activate it with their fingers.
I don't have enough moisture on my fingers to complete this circuit, so like I said, try the moisturizer, try cleansing it, and put some moisture on your fingers. The other thing you may experience is sometimes you go ahead and start the machine and sometimes it will shut down in the middle of a cycle. Sometimes we may have problem with the outlet. A properly wired outlet is not only properly grounded but is what we call polarized. So what we can do in this case is if we're having trouble starting it, what we'd like to do is unplug the machine first, give it a good fifteen or thirty seconds before we plug it back in. Let's go ahead and plug it back in and then see if we can get the unit to turn on again. Okay, one way to test the outlet to verify if we have a problem with it is I have this cheap device that you can pick up at a hardware store. It only cost a few dollars. It will verify the condition of your outlet to tell you if it is good or not. It is very easy to read. It has lights on there so you just follow the instructions here and it tells you if the outlet is good or not.
So in this case what we can do is disconnect the washer again. I'm going to move the dryer plug temporarily so we can see that and then I'm going to plug it into where my washer was and we can see these two lights on here telling me that my outlet is actually wired correctly. Now, if I got a red light and one of those lights is missing, I'll just go to this little guide here, it'll tell me if the outlet is polarized or not, or the outlet might not be properly grounded. Now an appliance can operate for years with an outlet that is not properly grounded or not polarized. But every once in a while, it could affect your product's electronics and sometimes a simple little thing like unplugging the product and plugging it back in will fix it. But this is something we really don't want to leave it at that. This may be a security issue. Your lines are actually reversed in there so it will require the electrician to come out and go ahead and take care of it for you. You can verify with the electrician when he comes down here saying yes I have a problem, he says I have an open ground or I have an outlet that is not polarized. They will be able to take care of it and serve you better in the future with it.
Okay, okay, I hope these tips helped you figure out what's going on with the washing machine. In no way are they intended to replace the service if you need it. So if these tips don't work, we may need to send a technician down there for service. If you feel uncomfortable doing any of these things, by all means, we don't want to make you feel uncomfortable or make you feel like this is something you're obligated to do. So these were just a few little tips to avoid this service call. So thank you for being an LG customer and thank you for spending some time with us today.
FAQs
LG Washing Machine – Why doesn't my LG washing machine turn on? | LG USA support? ›
Most issues with an LG washing machine not having power are caused by a tripped circuit breaker, a faulty electrical outlet, a power outage in the home, or in rare cases a unit that requires repair.
Why is my washing machine not powering on? ›You should check the outlet to make sure it's working. Then, check if a fuse is blown or a circuit breaker thrown. If those both work, see if the Delay Start button or Control Lock feature has been activated. Sometimes it's as simple as opening and closing the door to reset the washer.
Why wont my washing machine start just clicks? ›If your washing machine won't start and just clicks, there may be debris in the washer drain. Check the drain to see if there's any debris (particularly large items, like coins) that may be stuck inside.
How do I force restart my LG? ›Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys simultaneously until the device reboots. Typically this will take 11-12 seconds.
What are common problems with LG washing machines? ›LG has a long history of making home appliances, including washing machines. However, like all washers, LG washers are still prone to wear and tear. The most common issues with LG washers relate to the washer not draining, wires breaking, or excess water caused by a defective water inlet valve.
Do LG washing machines have fuses? ›If the washer overheats, the thermal fuse will blow. If the line fuse blows, the washer won't start. To determine if the thermal fuse is at fault, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the fuse does not have continuity, replace it.
How do you know if washing machine motor is broken? ›If the washer fills to the selected level and you hear the motor running but the washer is not agitating, set the dial on the spin cycle. If the washer drains the water and you hear the motor running (making noise but not spinning), it is likely you have a broken motor coupler.
How long should a washing machine last? ›The average life of a washing machine ranges from 10 to 13 years, although some brands can manufacture washing machines with an even longer lifespan than the average appliance. So, while you are on the hunt for your new washing machine, you won't have to wonder “how long should a washing machine last” anymore.
Why wont my washing machine open or spin? ›The most likely cause is an inoperative drain pump, or a clogged debris filter. If your washer has water inside the Drum, the door will not open to prevent a flood. If you are using to sanitize the cycle and the water is extremely hot, the door will not open to prevent injury.
What is the most common washing machine failure? ›A washing machine not draining is one of the most common problems we encounter. It can be caused by one of the following: - The drain hose or pump is clogged with a small item of clothing, residual gunk or other debris. - The washer is malfunctioning and not engaging the drain/spin cycle properly.
How can you tell if a circuit board is bad? ›
Check for signs of damage on the circuit board, such as crushed components, bulges, cracked wires, misplaced or extra solder, burn marks and scratches that indicate that the board needs to either be replaced or to be repaired. It is possible for scratches to expose and damage the connections beneath the lamination.
How much does it cost to replace a washer control board? ›The average cost to replace a washer motherboard is $250 to $400. The washing machine motherboard is also known as the appliance's circuit board or control board. If the motherboard is not functioning properly, you may not have the capacity to use any of the machine's settings.
Does unplugging a washer reset it? ›Reset your washing machine
There really isn't a way to reset the washing machine. What you can do instead is power cycle it: Unplug it (or turn off power at the circuit breaker), wait some time for the electrical charge to clear out of the washer (usually 1 to 5 minutes at most), and then power it up again.
To reset the electronic controls on your washer, shut off the circuit breaker or fuse to the washer or unplug the washer for 2 minutes. For models that have a timer control knob, turn the knob around and back to any position other than final spin for the interrupted cycle. Then, restore power.
What causes a washing machine to fuse? ›When an RCD circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows when you switch the appliance on or off, this is usually caused by leakage to the ground or a short circuit. The problem can be caused by the incorrect connection of the appliance.
How do you unlock a washing machine that won't turn on? ›Turning off the machine at the mains should allow the door lock to cool down, and after a few minutes, you'll be able to open the washing machine door. The interlocks can take some time to release at the end of the cycle, so be patient. The most common cause is water left in the machine. Try running a spin/drain cycle.
Why is my Whirlpool washer not powering on? ›Check to see if a household circuit breaker or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet has tripped. If so, reset the circuit breaker or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. If the washer is on a fuse box, check to see if a fuse has blown and replace it, if necessary.
How long is washing machine locked for? ›The thermal lock should release the washing machine door about two minutes after the cycle ends. It works by heating up and expanding, so even when the washing machine is switched off the door won't unlock immediately.
Can I override the lock on my washing machine? ›The lid lock mechanisms on some washers are heat-activated, which means overriding them is as simple as letting them cool off. Let the washer sit unplugged for about 10 minutes, then try lifting the lid. If it opens, you're all set.
How do you reset the control board on a GE washer? ›To reset the electronic controls on your washer, shut off the circuit breaker or fuse to the washer or unplug the washer for 2 minutes. For models that have a timer control knob, turn the knob around and back to any position other than final spin for the interrupted cycle. Then, restore power.
How do you unlock a Whirlpool washer that won't turn on? ›
Press the “Control Lock” button on your Whirlpool washer for three seconds. After three seconds, you should be able to open the door.
What to do when washing machine suddenly stops? ›Try stopping the machine, draining the water and rearranging the laundry. The spinning cycle won't start if the water hasn't drained completely. Turn off your washing machine and check the drain hose and the pump filter. The hose shouldn't be bent or clogged.
Does a washing machine have a circuit breaker? ›Dedicated circuits are required for some appliances in your home, like your oven or air conditioner. But does a washing machine need its own circuit? According to most building codes, the answer is yes. A washing machine circuit is typically a 20-amp circuit served by a 10-gauge wire.
What fuse is in a washing machine plug? ›13A fuse tends to be used in a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, iron etc. Most manufactures have now standardised plug fuse ratings to be either 3A or 13A types, however older equipment may need a 5A fuse.
