A specification was revealed in 1980. This was called the Ethernet Blue Book and was also referred to as the DIX standard and called for speeds up to 10 Mpbs to be introduced. Although we are now able to achieve speeds of 10 Gpbs, the needs continue to grow, with copper-based cables not being used and developed to offer speeds well beyond that.
